What the HECK is wrong with SSC?

Postby SEAL on Sat Sep 03, 2011 2:43 pm

When I went to SSC a little while ago, I found something very queer. Instead of the news headlines on the homepage, I got this:

Warning: file_exists() [function.file-exists]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/usr/lib/20060613/../../../home/virtual/site184/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_5.3.so) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/virtual/site184/fst:/etc:/usr/local:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/lib:/usr/include:/usr/share:/lib:/bin:/sbin:/tmp:/proc:/dev:/usr/java) in /home/virtual/site184/fst/home/forums/public_html/vbseo.php on line 3

Warning: file_exists() [function.file-exists]: open_basedir restriction in effect. Warning: file_exists() [function.file-exists]: open_basedir restriction in effect. And when I click on the forums, it shows a screen with the same message (Or something similar anyway.). I can access everything else, just not the forums.

Looks like something wrong with the forums, perhaps with the database access. Hopefully, Ben or someone with server access can find out what's actually going on and get it fixed.

It is a different problem now. My browser (ios safari) says that it "cannot decode raw data".

"The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression." in Firefox. Dunno if Ben's doing something. I think I did have server access, but I've no idea how one fixes this kind of problem.

Weird. I've got:
This webpage is not available
The webpage at http://forums.sscentral.org/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
Error 330 (net::ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED): Unknown error.
I've got Google Chrome. It looks like the problem isn't related to browsers.
Drench 'em ALL!!!!

We need someone to test on Opera. :goofy: Who actually uses Opera?

Also, the news is partially fixed.

I get the "cannot decode raw data" error on Mac Safari
On the news page, I also get:

"Deprecated: Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() is deprecated in /home/virtual/site184/fst/home/forums/public_html/includes/class_core.php on line 1470"

And then all the articles

The news is back now, but when I click on the forums, it says "Internet Explorer cannot display this page." (That also tells you what browser I'm using. :goofy: )

Part of the problem on the homepage is still there.

Also, get firefox.

It helps to email me to make sure I know about problems. I do not check SSC or here very regularly any longer.

I'm investigating.

Edit: This probably is not a coincidence: http://updates.apisnetworks.com/2011/07 ... ptember-3/

Edit #2: I've made some progress, but it seems that I'll have to disable the shorter URL addon. I'm trying to figure out how to do that right now.

Edit #3: That didn't work either. I'm tempted to say that the old version of vB that SSC uses is not compatible with the current server setup.

Edit #4: The problem is not easily solved. I do not have much more time to investigate this. The SSC forums are offline until further notice. When/if the forums come back online they will be put into a read-only mode. I do not have the time to maintain them and these problems will only become more severe as time passes. I should remind everyone that I predicted something similar would occur in the past, but no one wanted the forum to close. Sorry, but it is going to be hard now that it was so abrupt.

Also, to be clear, no data is lost. The forum software simply does not appear to be compatible with the server any longer.

The short version: This is the end of the SSC forums unless someone can and desires to maintain them. I do not have the time. If everything stays as-is then the forums will be permanently set into a read-only mode.

Edit #5: I have the forum running now with the URL shortener disabled. This might only be a temporary fix, however.

Edit #6: Yes, this fix is temporary at best as far as I can tell. At best I've bought the SSC forums time until March 2012.

It does appear that vB 3.5 is incompatible with PHP 5.3. There does not appear to be anything I can do about this unless I get much better at PHP and spend some time figuring out what's wrong.

Silence, Drenchenator, and I have done the vast majority of the technical work for SSC. Silence disappeared from the community a few years ago as he went to college. Drenchenator doesn't have enough time or the knowledge to fix these problems. So, I end up doing all the tasks that often go unnoticed.

It is possible to switch to a different forum software, however, I do not have the time to do that. And I do not have the time to maintain that software either.

So, the best path forward as far as I can tell is to make a static HTML archive of the SSC forums and post that online. SSC is now online, however, on Jan. 1st, 2012 I will turn the forums offline and make the static HTML archive. The old forum software will be replaced with this archive. Every post will remain online, however, there will be no actual forum software. Static HTML files do not need any maintenance, so they will remain online indefinitely.

Edit: The :9000 in the URL shows the temporary nature of this fix. Yes, this is normal. No, I won't even do what I mentioned above. I'm going to archive the forums as soon as possible.

Gosh, I would maintain the boards, but I don't really know much about programming and stuff like that. Maybe someone else will?

I'd hate to see the SSC forums gone, even if activity is almost dead at the moment.

To be extra clear, I plan to keep all of the forum posts online. The difference is that you will not be able to add any new posts once the archive is made.
