SSC issues

Postby CA99 on Tue Mar 23, 2010 4:43 pm

SSC has been constantly going down randomly for the past few weeks or months. (not sure) It will just fail to turn up a page usually for hours at a time or perhaps just minutes (though I'm not sure on this either) but this has happened several times in the past few weeks. SSC usually goes back up and works fine afterwards.

Perhaps scaling back the iSn forums too soon wasn't the best idea? We currently don't have a lot of people who are able to manage community hubs so the hope to move to WWc was not well timed.

Current as of this post, SSC is not on right now.

Missed this thread... :goofy:

Perhaps scaling back iSn so soon wasn't the best idea, but it has happened and, well, we'll see how it goes. I'd like to see how things develop during the course of the 2010 season and will make various future decisions based on that. For now, I remain optimistic that server glitches are only temporary and aren't signs of deeper problems with the site. Heck, iSoaker.net was down earlier today and I had to contact tech support to reboot the database.

I think a good percentage of the community was opposed to the scaleback though some didn't voice it out too much. I was rather indifferent to it since the parallel threads were getting a bit annoying. I used to have all war reports posted posted here and seldom posted them at SSC, but looks like that may not be the case now since we lack a specific forum for discussing water warfare and discussion has boiled down to stock soakers only, which IMO is quite dry and boring (no pun intended) and people have previously voiced valid complaints about too much discussion on guns and not enough on wars. I guess what I've done about it is always tending to steer the new product discussions towards usage to water warfare, whether I've intended to do so or not.

Part of that is the members' fault. The last forum to center on water warfare was gone in 2006, it's just not that interesting of a topic anymore. WWC is probably a 2011 project at this point. BTW I'm kind of back, been very busy (would also like to revert back to "DX" here and at SSC).

That was the point of the downscale; to remove the water warfare forum so that the discussions on water warfare would be concentrated at the main hub. As SSC is the hub, the challenge there is steering more conversations into water warfare discussions as opposed to either stock, homemade, or modding threads. WWc could have offered a *cleaner* slate to build from, but it is also very hard to get communities to migrate into unfamiliar space. If WWc can be revived, that'd be great, but IMO, that's a still wait-and-see for me.

BTW, who is "Lewis"? :goofy:

Good to see you around, DX.

@iSoaker: "Lewis" is the guy in his signature he forgot to remove. =p

SSC is still heavily on homemades/modding and honestly, those discussions are still IMO better than stock blaster discussions. But as for wars, I haven't started much discussion on it myself and instead, I've sort of pushed the topic into the more common discussions. Perhaps I may post some scenarios similar to what iSoaker has done in the past but this time complete with 3D maps. (which can be done in 3D modelling software or heck, video games/mods)

I never even notice when the main site goes down since I just use a link to the forums each time. ( forums.sscentral.org ) If you bother wasting time going to sscentral.org first there's no point if you just go there to post instead of read.

I wasn't aware of a larger downtime problem. C-A_99 was the one who told me. Has SSC been down recently?

If you get an error message, please post it.

Edit: I've subscribe to this topic, so posting here will inform me of any problems.

For the last few weeks or so, the site appears to have been working fine without any downtime on both the forums and site. Before that was when the occassional problems were but they didn't return any error messages.

It's good to hear there aren't any remaining issues. I have a few ideas of what might have caused the problems, but I'm not certain. I'll investigate in the summer.

@martianshark: If both of my accounts were merged, I'd be #6 in total posts. Speaking of that, I'm getting close to 1000 total...

Same is going on here for me. I usually never notice when it happens since I don't often have a reason to go around the site other than the forums. (Except when linking articles, etc.)
