HydroBrawl Water Warfare

Just a little mini-site I made about a week ago to help us get started, and serves as a place where I can tell people to go when sending invitations to our events. I'm slowly making random updates as we progress. I put up some of my armory and gallery there, as well as some crappy battle reports, but other than that, it's mostly rules, setup info, etc. No reviews, articles, nor anything of that sort. (doesn't seem like people are that interested in reading those and if they were, they should be on iSc or SSC.)

Yes, I know the organization is terrible, the fact I'm using frames, and also the fact that the navbar background is 512x512 and the main background is 1024x1024. I didn't have the time to completely reduce and optimize everything, but I'll get to it as soon as I can.

Nice site. This is a great start. A lot of this stuff I haven't seen before, but I suppose you've posted it. I think I'll be reading it for the next few hours...

If you ever think of anything you want to do or write up, make a list and outline each individual page. The latest SSC update basically was following through outlines and lists getting pages out. SilentGuy, DX, and Drenchenator can attest that's how we did it. Getting something up with an outline was half the work.

Another thing you might want to try is making some guides for what you've done, even if there are other guides to it. Another view on something is appreciated.

Keep up the good work!

Well, as of right now, I'm working on adding some basics "How Soakers Work" type stuff, but once I manage to find the time to make individual pages for each soaker (or at least put some description before pointing to iSoaker), I'll get to it. Eventually, I might get repair guides up too. So... I suppose the main goal here is to move away from becoming excessively reliant on the big sites, but it just got started so I'm not going to get there quite yet. There's other stuff to do, such as organizing everything into tables. (even if I keep the frameset, which I don't see any reason not to; the tables will just make the text easier to read against the background.)

That's a "quick site"? If so, I most definitely look forward to it when you've put a little more time into it. :goofy:

It's definitely off to a great start. Lots of new content on there; I'll need a little more time to browse the site. I also will need to add links to it in various places.

Keep on building!

Well actually, I had a lot of the information written down previously, but improved on it once I made everything into frames. The process of getting the random stuff together (not just info, but a lot of the graphics) that was already there did not take that long.

Thanks for the comments. As I've said, I'll be getting more stuff up there as I get the time to. I'm eventually going to have to create info pages for specific events and perhaps printer-friendly maps. =)

Ok, I got some more updates up. (Hence the double post.) Everything has been organized into tables, so the text is always readable regardless of the background. I also added a history section as well as a how soakers work area, which I still need to add diagrams and details to. Eventually I might be able to expand and add in stuff on how various valves work but right now it's just the 3 different pressurization methods. (with air pressure divided to 2 sections - seperate and PR) The history section seems to have been written poorly however.

Next up, I'll try to get some information on stock soakers, then maybe homemades, mods, and repairs. All it's coming down to right now is how useful everything will be to the typical player at our wars and I highly doubt anyone will read even the soaker history section. However, I still thought it was worth getting up, just in case anyone (at our events) cares. Of course, they could be potentially useful for soakerdom as well.

Now, after working with all the tables, I've considered the fact that arranging the entire site layout into one or two large tables would be better than the current frameset. There would be more space and everything wouldn't look so unprofessional like it does right now lol.

If you'd be willing to ditch the frames, I'd be happy! :goofy: I was never a big fan of frames though I had dabbled in them once-upon-a-time. My main complaint with frames is that deep-linking doesn't work so well.

That said, updates looking good! Feel free to double, triple, quadruple, etc.-post anytime you wish to note updates on your site! You never need to excuse yourself for noting new content or changes to your site.

It looks good, but where are the 2000/2500 in the armoury picture? They aren't in the first picture. Might want to add that to the not shown list.

The 2000 and 2500 belong to my neighbor and therefore are not considered part of my armory. I updated the captioning in the gallery to clarify this.

I suppose I could ditch the frames by simply putting the navbar at each page, in which the top would be easiest. (but also laziest) Perhaps I could pack everything into a 2x1 table, with everything on the right side and nav on the left, but then there will be problems with unused space, and I'm worried the layout will not expand in width to accomodate for higher resolutions, which is an issue on several forms I know as well as facebook.

You can make the tables expand in width. Something like this should work:

Code: Select all
<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td width="300">
Insert navigation stuff here
</td>
<td>
Insert content here
</td>
</tr>
</table>

I'm pretty sure that's what I used to do on old versions of SSC. Now I use CSS with absolute positioning and tables where it makes sense.

I would suggest learning CSS now because it will save you a lot of work in the long run. Do a Google search for something like "css two column layout" and start reading. ;)

There is this incredible site that I know, it includes the other types of site designs. It is called Tizag.com. It covers HTML and CSS, and Javascript, to mention a few.

Feel free to check it out.

Fateback (the free host) is down due to updating. (I wouldn't have even noticed)

Apparently it's still down. I read around their forums and they're still working on the upgrades and having some trouble as I can't login to the control panel there. Eventually they should fix it up though.

There's really nothing terribly special on there, just some fancy little graphics from me screwing around in fireworks and what not, as well as some pictures and a map, but the content itself will take some time to update and improve as the site was intended more for local wars than to help beginning water warriors in general.

Edit: This editing of an archived topic may be an abuse of my mod powers, but here goes.

Turns out my account was dropped when they changed the system since it consisted of invalid characters. ("-" and "_" as in C-A_99) I just opened a new account and re-uploaded everything so it's all working again.

Hope it comes back soon! While a smaller site, I do like its original content and images!
