Seriously consider wooden pumps SilentGuy. I tried one in the style of Pepper's homemade water gun just a few months ago. The wood expanded from the water to hold the O-ring in place and there are absolutely no leaks. Of course, if the wood is dry, it won't seal well, but that's not a problem. It really surprised me. Wood is actually a lot easier to work with than aluminum and cheaper. Cut a slot for an O-ring in the wood (my rod I believe is 3/8" in diameter), put an O-ring over that spot, and then dip that end of the rod in a glass of water until it expands.

DX, I definitely agree with you about the ball valve once you get used to it. The main problem that I noted was that the movement is ackward to those who regularly use a trigger at first. Right now I have no problems with ball valves at all and in fact prefer them.

Getting high range wasn't ever a problem for me. Balance issues also never were a problem for me because I use backpacks more often than not. I suppose balance should deserve more attention for single-piece blasters.

Hmm, that's an interesting thought, that the seal should become better. I'll try it. The problem was that I was using a 1/2" rod in 1/2" Schedule 40 PVC, and no O-ring formed a very good seal.
