Super Soaker Central moving day

Various local and external online and offline resources for the water warrior

Postby Doom on Sat Jul 30, 2005 6:43 pm

For the last time Super Soaker Central will be moving! More information is available at the Super Soaker Central homepage.

I've made a back-up of everything, except for the forums which I have opened up again because I figured there would be no sense in keeping them closed while I figure out how to restore the database (phpMyAdmin has a maximum file size of 2 megs - ours is over 10 compressed!). I was planning on using phpMyAdmin to restore the database, but that plan needs work at the moment.

There's more information about the move on our front page, but any new developments will be heard first here while we are in the move.

Me been abroad the past few days. Just saw this post now. Hope the move goes/went smoothly! Switching hosts can be a pain, especially if there are unexpected server behaviours in the new place.

Database restored, but there's a problem with the host: IPB is incompatible with PHP5. I'm getting a "Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: sql_queries" error, which from what I read can only be fixed by using PHP4. This is something I had not anticipated because I thought IPB was a fairly modern forum software. For more information on this error, please read this thread.

Sadly, we can't keep the forums like this. I'll be setting up a donations page so we could buy vBulletin without resorting to advertisements on the website (which isn't an option). I do have more than enough money to buy vBulletin ($160 price), but I was hoping on making another homemade water gun or two with the money.

If anyone is interested in helping us out, please send at least a dollar or two! The donations page will have mailing addresses and a PayPal address if all goes well. I also may try selling a water gun or two to generate some money as well. After maybe a week or two, if we don't get the money necessary in donations, I'll pay the remainder.

I'm going to update the nameservers today, upload the website and get our hosted sites set-up. Our forum is second to our website at this point. ;)

Hmmm, if you are selling guns what ones would they be?

Also, I may donate a dollar or two.

I would hate to part with any water guns I have, but I was considering spicing up an APH I already had finished and shoving it on eBay because they are completely replaceable (I have 3 anyway). I also was debating with other gun to put up... if I were to put up another one of mine it would be the CPS 2700 (I'd de-K-mod it but the check valve freeze is permanent). Possibly Spinner or Neo would have something to sell to help out as well.

Forgot to point the nameservers in other news... but I'll do it whenever because there's no rush.

The donations page is in the works, but it's best to send early. Please send any donations to: mtrettel@adelphia.net

As incentive to donate, all donators will receive special "premium" membership at the forums with more offered (PMs, uploads, etc.). Those who donate $30 or more will receive their choice of yourname@sscentral.org and hosting at http://yourname.sscentral.org/. The difference with the hosting from the free hosting we offer is that you will also receive additional features such as CGI, SSH and more space. However, please be aware that we can't give away our space forever - the earlier you send the more likely you will get your incentive.

What is the limit to the space a site already hosted can use? SM will have to move if the new limit is too small. :(

20 megs is the default limit, but since you've been with us I'll let you have what you'd like. If you want, I can set your account up again before we come online and you can upload everything and add some email accounts. Just send me a PM here or email.

We've only received two donations thusfar, and both are appreciated very much! Again, if you can donate, please do. Every donation regardless of how much will help.

I think we'll have the forum back online again by the end of this week, this time running on vBulletin. No posts will be lost because the forum will be converted to vBulletin, however, passwords will have to be reset and I believe the custom profile fields such as "Favorite water gun" can't be converted sadly (though I'll try to save and manually add as many as I can).

It will take a bit of time to get the forum back to where it was previously because I will have to edit the skins, do some modifications and apply some 301 redirects, but in the end the switch will be well worth the cost and downtime.

An email will be sent out to all members when the forums are online and I will post here. :)

A complete forum password reset? That's gotta be annoying. Glad the posts won't be lost. I hate the process of switching forums/hosts, etc. Never as smooth as one wants. Anyhow, looking forward to seeing SSCentral up and running fully again!

vBulletin has been bought. The conversion should occur tonight or tommorow, though it could take several hours to convert (sadly). Once the conversion is complete, the remainder of the site will be uploaded and the nameservers switched.

Afterwards, I will set-up an .htaccess file to redirect the old URLs. Several modifications are also planned - even though vBulletin has an impressive feature set there's some thing you still need (mostly a friendly-URLs modification).

Thanks to everyone for being patient with us during these times! :)

Just wanted to tell everyone that I have converted the forums (after maybe 20 attempts?) and there appears to be no lost data aside from the passwords and possibly thread descriptions (I think vB has them, but not visibly).

I'll need to do some cleaning up before moving the forum to the new host. The restored database could not have been used due to errors (which is why it took so many attempts) so no posts have been lost at all (even Soakologist's "TALK!" thread still remains). There's no forum permissions anymore, so everyone can view every single forum (including the mods and admins ones, not that they have been used in ages).

I intend on making the new default skin the Classic vBulletin 2 style with some modifications to the graphics and such. I have been told that the colors don't appeal to some, so you could change the skin if I don't change the colors to match the site.

A lot of work has been done and more still needs to be done... I'll keep you all updated.

Also, we are still taking donations, so if you forgot to help us out, please still send something because it will help pay off my debt and help me make the homemade water gun I originally intended to!

The database is on the new host and so is the website. However, I'm working with support to get the forums back working again because apparently there's a MySQL error.

I'll need to upload the last few news items, but that appears to be the only thing that'll need uploading at the moment. I plan on switching the nameservers later today once the forums are functioning again. After that, I will install the new skin with one custom graphic that I've made in the short time I've had (it's a guy shooting a CPS 2000 where the old vBulletin logo went).

Tommorow I leave to go to a Boy Scout camp (Camp Airy, now Round Meadow, for those who know it). I may or may not have access to computers with internet, so don't expect me to be online at all. Spinner has complete access to everything and if there's any problems he'll handle them. Neuro hasn't been around much, but Spinner could give him the passwords and such if he needs them.

The forums will need upgraded features including the spell check we all love and the minumum post modification, so until then I will excure bad spelling to a certain extent. Also, for some reason vBulletin only has a word censor and not a word filter - all works are censored as ****. The database will also need cleaning up because a lot of HTML is filtering through where it shouldn't.

Last but most definetly not least, all of you must manually reset your password! If you don't have access to the email address you registered with, ask an admin who's online to change your email address or reset it for you.

I've been considering setting up a few people to be admins temporarily to help with the password and configuration issues also, so if you're interested please post about it here. Remember, this is a JOB - you must actually do work, not just sit around and go "I'm an admininistrator!"

^ Here's where the forums will be until the nameservers propagate. Feel free to reset your passwords right now. Also, if our domain ever gets bought by squatters again, you can use this URL to access everything!

Ok.. just manually reset my password. I'll admit I found the password process painless, but it was a little different than I expected. Also, the forums feel foreign, being a different set-up than before.

Onwards to new things, I suppose!

Yep. The whole forum feels foreign to me too. You should see the admin CP - it's the complete opposite of the Invision one, but at least it works.

I've been having some trouble getting the nameservers to change so I'll have to ask support... don't know how many times I've done that in the past month. :blues:

Somehow we managed to gain about 1000 posts in the conversion, which makes me wonder if IPB and vBulletin count posts differently. :goofy:

Hmm.. I think the new forums don't like me.

One of my posts from yesterday seems to have disappeared (unless, of course, it was deleted). As well, the password that worked yesterday after I changed it no longer works today. ???

Trying again...

Edit: actually, now I'm more confused. It seems that the password reset likely worked for http://www.sscentral.org/vb/index.php?

However, that place is completely different from
http://linear.apisnetworks.com/sscentral.org/~forums/

What's going on?

I see what went on. The problem was that there are actually 3 completely separate SSC boards right now - old host forums.sscentral.org, old host sscentral.org/vb/ (where I did the upgrade), and new host forums.

I've fixed the URL problem - didn't notice it before.

Use the Apis Networks URL until it comes online as forums.sscentral.org.

Use this URL to reset passwords: http://linear.apisnetworks.com/sscentr....=lostpw

Thanks!

Just a note.. when resetting passwords, the auto-email that is sent directs users to http://forums.sscentral.org/login.php?a=pwd...

That will work once the pointer works, but presently, it just loads up a 404 page.

I grabbed the rest of the URL and pasted it into the 'http://linear..." link and it appears to have worked.

New hosts.. new probs..err..solutions. :goofy:

That was really confusing changing my password. I finally worked out the right address to use. I did what iSoaker said take http://linear.apisnetworks.com/sscentral.org/~forums/login.php? and then use the code bit from the email after it.
