link exchange

Various local and external online and offline resources for the water warrior

I guess there's no virtual soaking forum anymore? It's been too long since I checked here. Anyway, I have a question, and I thought some people here could help me out.
I work in real estate, mostly making brochures and fliers, but also updating and studying listings on the MLS website. At present, I only work for the top realtor at that particular branch of Weichert, but I may be branching out and working for others soon.
Anyway, one of the other realtors in the building saw me and decided teenager = computer expert, so he's trying to hire me to handle link exchange for his website. This would allow me to make a little extra money at three in the morning or so, when I'm usually up. The problem is, I know nothing at all about link exchange. Is there anything in particular I should know or read?

The question becomes, how 'automated' is the link exchange going to be. What was done at WaterWar.net was pretty primitive by webstandards (i.e. just getting people to apply for a links exchange and actually personally double-checking that the site in question put up a reciprocal link before adding them). However, there are more potent online programs that will, from time to time, query given page looking for page code to verify a site is still having an active link, otherwise it'll automatically remove the site's link from the link exchange. I'm not sure how SSCentral handles its links, but I know places like webring.org have code-sniffers.

Do searches on the web on how others handle link-exchanges. There's undoubtedly a lot more info out there than I know. :goofy:

Our WebRing script doesn't actually check if the link is there. If it did, half of our WebRing members wouldn't be there. I will, from time to time, email those without links back to us, but it rarely ever actually gets them to put something up. I should remove them from the WebRing, but the thing is that most of them really have no idea how to add the code in the first place. I've decided to just let it go for now.

What sort of link exchange is this? How many sites will you be linking to and from? If it's a small number of sites, you may just want to do this manually like WaterWar.net was. If there is a larger number of sites, ask the guy with the website if he has any scripting languages available, you may be able to get up a Perl of PHP link exchange script that will do the work for you.

Well, he didn't tell me much about it, but he said that I should find as many sites as I could and send them this e-mail. From there on it would be added automatically.
